NBC12 VIEWPOINT: January is National Mentoring Month

By: Kym Grinnage email

January is one of my favorite months, and not because it's the beginning of a new year, but because it is National Mentoring Month. I can't think of a better thing to do than to be mentor to a young person in need. In 2002, the Harvard School of Public Health and MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership, created National Mentoring Month. The goal for this month is to focus attention on the need for mentors and to challenge us as individuals, businesses, government agencies, schools, faith based communities and non-profits, to work together to increase the number of mentors in our community.

In Richmond, since 1993, the Virginia Mentoring Partnership has prepared more than 30,000 volunteers for their roles as mentors and tutors. In addition they provide training services and best practices to individuals and organizations who want to become involved in mentoring or increase the quality of their mentoring programs.

There are hundreds of young people in Central Virginia who are in need of mentor right now. If you or someone you know has an interest in mentoring or supporting quality based mentoring, contact The Virginia Mentoring Partnership at 804.828.1536 or go to vamentoring.org.

Being a mentor only takes a few hours of your time, but the effect on a child lasts a lifetime.
