Doctors: Get your flu shot while supplies last

Posted: Updated:
RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Doctors will tell you that it's not too late to get your flu shot, and the sooner the better. Some places said they have thousands of adult doses, some hundreds, and when it comes to vaccines for children, some have fewer than 30. With the last minute rush to get vaccinated, supply is only diminishing.

"Everywhere I go, people are getting sick," said Lauren Weaver.

So she didn't want to take any chances.

"A lot of family members, a lot of co workers…I decided now is the time. I need to get it taken care of. I don't usually get a shot but it seems so bad this year," Weaver added.

Medical providers say the outbreak that appears "so bad" doesn't have to hit you, if you get vaccinated.

"People haven't gotten a flu shot for the past few years because of the mild flu seasons and now that we have a very heavy flu season upon us, they are getting sick because they haven't had their flu shot," says Nurse Francine Bennett.

Bennett works with the Instructive Visiting Nurse Association. She says her group usually sees 10 to 15 people a month looking for a shot. This year, that's changed.

"We've been doing about 30 a day, 40, 50," she said.

The association has some 2,000 vaccines available. That's not the case everywhere.

"Some of the doctor's offices are out," Bennett said.

"Our supply is definitely dwindling," said Dr. Tana Taefer with Bremo Pharmacy on Staples Mill Road.

She says her pharmacy has some 100 doses are in stock.

Westwood Pharmacy on Patterson Avenue has some 200 doses, but when the supply runs out, that's it.

"All of the manufactured flu vaccine is gone. You can't call up a company and order more. It's all gone," Bennett added.
