PETERSBURG, VA (WWBT) -

Four people are charged after a chase and gunfight involving Petersburg Police.

Investigators say just before midnight, officers investigating gunshots near South Crater Road began following a black SUV matching the suspect description. They say the people inside began firing - and officers fired back.

The exchange continued during a pursuit until the SUV purposely drove into a police car at the corner of Wagner Road and Medical Park Boulevard. The driver of the van took off on foot. The three guys left in the van were quickly arrested.

Chaz Jherron Brown, Bennie Young, and Darius Deandre Harris are all charged with attempted capital murder. The driver, 25-year-old Andre Mason, is still at large.

The suspects were allegedly using MAC 10 semi-automatic weapons - one of the weapons up for debate on a possible ban by lawmakers.

Petersburg Police Chief John Dixon is one of a select group of chiefs across the country who is part of Vice President Biden's panel exploring this issue.
