A parent was taken into custody after he brought a knife onto the campus of Clark Springs Elementary School Wednesday morning, according to Richmond Public School officials.
The parent walked into a classroom with a 16" hunting knife strapped to his leg, according to school officials. He claimed he forgot that it was there, so security confiscated the knife and allowed him to return to his child's spelling bee, officials said.
The man was given the knife back when he told staff he would leave. However, he returned to the classroom, security officials said.
School security officials have reviewed security protocol with building staff, received training from Richmond Police and are meeting with security staff at all schools this week.
Security leaders say they don't believe anyone was in harm's way but are taking the incident very seriously.
