Petersburg wants public’s input on new city hall

PETERSBURG, VA (WWBT) -

Leaders in Petersburg are asking for the public's help to design a new city hall next month, setting a meeting to ask how the future building can make life easier for residents.

"Right now, people may have to visit three different buildings in order to finish their business with the city," said Petersburg City Manager William E. Johnson III in an interview Wednesday. "We want all the major departments to be on the first floor, so people can walk in, get their problems fixed, and move on."

No designs have been chosen for the building, but its location on West Washington Street between North Union and North Market Streets has been finalized.

Petersburg's new city hall will be across the street from the new Multi-Modal Transportation center, and one block from the $12.7 million library currently under construction. Work on the new city hall will begin early fiscal year 2015, with a completion date in fiscal year 2016.

The public input meeting is scheduled for Feb. 5 at 7:30 p.m. in the old Petersburg train station.
