Input needed on Hull Street Corridor Revitalization Plan

Posted: Updated:
RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

The City of Richmond and Chesterfield County are looking for input on improvements to an almost five mile stretch of Hull Street. The goal is to revitalize that area.

The road between Belt and Walmsley Boulevards includes a major gateway at Chippenham Parkway. On one side you have the entrance into the urban landscape of the City of Richmond and on the other access to the suburbia of Chesterfield County. Most would agree, neither side really says "welcome"!

"Unintentionally it serves as a sort of Berlin Wall between the city and the county," said City Planner James Hill, who has been working on a federal grant for the Hull Street Corridor Revitalization Plan.

Both localities want to improve a street that's been called bad for business and unsafe for families.

The plan highlights the need for improvements to the streetscape.

Along much of the road there aren't any sidewalks or safe places to walk. Often you'll see paths in the grass, which have been worn in by the people who have been forced to walk there.

Neci Walker says fixing that would help her Hull Street tax business.

"I would love to see people being able to have sidewalks to walk up and down Hull Street to be able to access the office easier," Walker told us.

So far, Hill says they've received a lot of feedback from the people who live and work around here.

"They want better restaurants," he relayed. "They want more restaurants, sit down restaurants, other than more fast food restaurants. They would like it to be safer. They would like some green space."

If the city and county can come to some sort of consensus, the changes could improve the quality of life and socio-economic situation.

"It should have probably happened a while ago," Walker maintained.

The goal is to have a concrete plan in place next month.
