Gun found at Highland Springs High School

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) -

Two students have been detained following the discovery of a gun on the Highland Springs High School campus.

The two teens were in a student parking lot around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, where they weren't supposed to be, according to school officials.

As the school resource officer was questioning the 10th grade students, he noticed a gun near a dumpster.

The two boys were detained for questioning, but no charges have been filed. School officials notified parents about an hour later.  A K9 unit was also called in.

"I seen them searching bags in the school…and the officer said if you don't want the dog to come near you then stand back," says Desiree Price, a HSHS senior.

The school was never on lockdown and officials don't believe anyone was in danger, as the handgun was not inside the building.

Police have not said who they think owns the gun.

"It made me sick," says Laura Willis, she has two children who are students here.  Upon hearing the news, she drove straight to the school.

"It makes me worried every time they walk out the door," she said.

Tievon Canon graduated from Highland Springs and didn't want his younger brother to come back to school from a doctor's appointment on Tuesday.

"Like Virginia Tech and the other kids that got shot up you don't want that to happen here," he said.

Administrators say classes were never interrupted and the school's security team did a good job responding quickly.

"Our security policies and procedures are always under review to see how we can improve, do things better in the future," says Andy Jenks, the HCPS director of communication.

Some students NBC12 spoke to say while they wouldn't want this to happen at school, this incident doesn't really scare them.  The reason: they say they grew up with guns and are used to people threatening each other all the time.

Officers are speaking with several students at this time and the investigation is ongoing.
