One dead, one injured after double shooting in Dinwiddie

Herbert Bland, Sr. Herbert Bland, Sr.
DINWIDDIE, VA (WWBT) -

A domestic dispute in Dinwiddie County left a father dead and his son fighting for his life.

Police say they got a call for a disturbance at a home in the 20000 block of Harris Drive around 1 p.m. Monday. When they arrived, they said 23-year-old Herbert Bland, Jr. was stumbling out of the home with a gunshot wound.

He was flown by helicopter to VCU Medical Center.

When officers entered the home, they found his father, 62-year-old Herbert Bland, Sr. shot to death.

Bland's nephew Antonio Tucker was on hand to comfort the family and at the same time receive the body. Tucker is also a funeral director and finds himself following an all too familiar tragic scene around the holidays.

"During Christmas time last year, we lost my uncle - his brother - in a house fire, probably a half a mile from here so," said Tucker.

Now a mother is watching her son fight for his life and mourning the loss of her husband.

"She's taking it very hard," said Tucker. "She's taking it very hard. Which is to be expected."

Investigators are inside trying to piece together exactly what happened. They say this isn't the first time they have been to the home for a call about violence.

"We've been here before," said Major William Knott. "They were known to the department."

Knott, a father himself, says the double father-son shooting is especially jarring for the close-knit community.

"Its disturbing. Especially this time of year, we've just gotten through the holidays."

Police haven't said who instigated the violence. Herbert Sr. leaves behind a wife and young daughter.
