Construction begins for Redskin's training camp facility

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Behind Richmond's historic Science Museum, a multi-million dollar summer training facility for the Redskins is set to take shape, following a construction time-table of just under six months.

Officials confirmed Monday the official groundbreaking for the Leigh Street site will be held in mid-February. A team of archeologists is now excavating a dozen areas on the property, ensuring no historical artifacts lie underneath where turf will take shape. If no relics are found, major construction will move forward next month.

The $10 million training facility will include two full-sized football fields, a practice field, gym and locker rooms. Bon Secours Richmond Health System, a major sponsor of the project, will also build a facility dedicated to sports medicine and men's health.

"We are thrilled about the outreach the Redskins will make towards our kids, and our community," said Charlotte Perkins, chief performance management officer of Bon Secours. "Robert Griffin III is a wonderful role model, and we know this will be a great partnership going forward."

June 30, 2013 is the projected completion date for the training camp. The Redskins are expected to announce their training schedule in mid-May.

According to the Dec. 27 deal struck with the city and state, the team will stay at the Richmond facility for at least eight years. The team will relocate its training facilities from Ashburn, Va., 30 miles west of Washington, D.C.
