RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - VCU trailed at halftime for the first time since a November 24 loss to Missouri, but with a late three pointer and clutch free-throw shooting, was able to top Lehigh, 59-55, Saturday evening at the Siegel Center.
The Rams used a 13-4 first half run to jump out to a 25-15 lead, but Lehigh closed the frame on a 13-2 run of its own to take a 30-29 lead heading into halftime. The two teams traded buckets to start the second half, but Treveon Graham sparked an 11-2 run as VCU pulled ahead, 42-36. Gabe Knutson would hit a long two for the Mountain Hawks later in the half to tie the game at 46, but the Rams would stop up. Leading 52-51, Troy Daniels hit a big three to put VCU up by four, and the Rams used good defense and key free-throws to clinch the win.
The victory marks VCU's ninth win in a row and moves the Rams to 12-3 on the season. Graham paced the Rams with 17 points, while Daniels and Rob Brandenberg both scored eleven to round out the VCU players in double-figures.
Lehigh's C.J. McCollum entered as the nation's leading scorer, but was held to four points on limited minutes. He would leave in the first half with a foot injury.
VCU returns to action Wednesday at the Siegel Center, playing its first Atlantic-10 Conference game in history. The Rams will tip-off with Dayton at 7:00pm.
