Crews race to extinguish two fires, hours apart, gutting same house

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Fire engines lit up the night and returned to the same Northside neighborhood hours later, when a two-story house caught on fire twice Friday morning.

Crews first raced to the 3200 block of 4th Avenue at 3 a.m., only to return to the same address seven hours later.

"At this point, we're actively working to determine a cause for the fire," said Richmond Fire Battalion Chief David D. Pulliam, Jr. "We know there were no utilities connected to the house, no gas, no electricity, and it was vacant when the fire started."

Firefighters extinguished the first blaze within five minutes. It was not immediately clear if the second fire rekindled from smoldering embers, or if it was intentionally sparked.

Police and fire crews shut down two blocks of the neighborhood during response efforts, sealing off 4th Avenue between Burns and Pollock Streets, and Pollock Street between 5th and Dill Avenues.

Emergency workers contained the flames to the house, sparing surrounding homes of any damage. No firefighters or neighbors were injured.
