A California developer has revealed a multi-million dollar plan to bring an outlet mall to the Richmond-area.
The proposed site sits just off exit 89 on Interstate 95.
NBC12 got a look at the site design for what is being called "The Outlets at Richmond."
"It will be located right on the interstate and very accessible to all of those people," said Hanover County administrator Cecil Harris.
The $100 million complex will be completed in two phases. Harris says he is encouraged the first step - securing the land - is now done.
California-based Craig Realty Group closed escrow on the purchase of 43 acres of undeveloped land at the corner of Lakeridge Parkway and Lewistown Road on December 31.
"We are very excited about the proposal," said Harris. "We are very confidant that it is going to be followed through."
The outlet would share the exit with Bass Pro Shops. Craig Realty wants to build a new 392,000 square-foot outlet retail center with stores and restaurants.
"It really adds up to a great day for someone," said Steven Craig, CEO of Craig Realty Group. "It goes back to that same word I used earlier, that shopping experience."
We had an extensive conversation with Craig. He says the project has been three years in the making, and site tours are on going.
"We do have a number of companies that have committed to us and we are working on leases with them," said Craig.
Harris says the Hanover Board of Supervisors has approved the zoning. They will be working on more site planning in the coming months. The Craig Realty Group currently owns and operates developments in seven states across the country.
