Man records gunfire in East End neighborhood

Sounds of celebration and cheer fill the air for most on New Year's Eve. But one Henrico man says, in his neighborhood, happy times are interrupted by the piercing sound of gunfire.

He says the shots are celebratory but he wants something to be done before someone gets hurt.

Chris Monroe spent the majority of his New Year's Eve huddled in a corner in his house protecting himself and his dog.

As the countdown to midnight began, Monroe recorded the gunfire from his front porch using his cell phone.

"It literally sounded like a fire fight," said Monroe. "It sounded like Afghanistan."

Monroe says he often hears gunshots in his neighborhood on New Year's Eve. He says, this year it was worse. "There were multiple automatic weapons as well as shotguns and pistols," said Monroe.

Monroe says it got so bad, he called 911. He says the response he got from the dispatcher, wasn't what he expected.

"He said 'you know how the East End is. We would just advise you to go into an interior room,'" said Monroe.

That's when Monroe grabbed his dog and sat behind his front door, hoping if the gunfire came any closer, it couldn't get to him or his beloved pets.

Celebratory gunfire is illegal. In Richmond, police stepped up patrols New Year's Eve to crackdown on the issue.

Now, Monroe hopes Henrico County police will do the same.

NBC12 reached out to Henrico police for comment but haven't heard back yet.
