A big event in honor of Kwanzaa takes place in the day ahead at the Showplace.
The official kickoff to the annual celebration was Wednesday--but local organizers are inviting you to a big festival today at the showplace. The first Kwanzaa was celebrated in 1966 as a way for African American families to connect to their ancestral roots.
Today's festival starts at one and runs until 9 p.m.
Tickets for today's event are six dollars in advance--and seven at the door.
