Petersburg students tap into their "inner artists" during break

PETERSBURG, VA (WWBT) -

The students at Petersburg Area Art League, or PAAL, are getting a lesson in how to make their "masterpieces" even better, and they are doing it with only two colors- blue and silver.

"It's a holiday theme so we're not trying to have just Christmas or Hanukkah. It's just everything more winter, a celebration of the weather and the time of the year," said PAAL administrator Curtis Grimstead.

The children like to celebrate art in general, which is why they decided to give up a little bit of their free time to take part in the league's winter art camp.

It is the second year for the camp, which is about as long as 10-year-old Ivory Blizzard has been participating in the league's various art workshops. She wants to be an artist when she grows up.

"Because you get to do creative things," said Blizzard.

Ben Dickinson wants to be an artist, too. However, he says only as his "side job". He enjoys painting, as well as using crayons, but he also likes projects that require more than just paints and crayons- projects like the one he helped to create not too long ago.

"We took pen caps like these and we lay them down and made a picture of the painting "Starry Night", except we cut out the buildings because that would be too tricky because it's all different lights and colors on the building," said Dickinson.

PAAL organizers say this camp does two things- it gives the students something to do during the winter break, but more importantly, it gives them a chance to discover more about themselves - an opportunity they say is not offered as much in schools any more.

"It's good to get them involved at this age because some of them don't realize they are creative people unless they're exposed to the arts," said Grimstead.

Many of the students participating in the winter arts camp have already tapped into their "inner artists', and they just cannot wait to see what they are inspired to create next.
