App brings Times Square to you for New Year's Eve

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

If you can't make it to Times Square to watch the ball drop on New Year's Eve, there's still a way you can follow the action on your smartphone.

The official Times Square Ball app is available on Android and iPhone and has a countdown to the big moment, as well as some very neat options.

You can launch a pair of livestream of Times Square. One link takes you to a live view of the jumbo screen in real time. The other has a promotional video up at the moment, but starting 5 p.m. Monday it will have a commercial free web stream of the performances and action in Times Square.

You can also use the photos feature to put your face on the Jumbotron and pretend that you were actually there. Your picture can actually end up on the big screen, if you can get enough of your friends to vote for it.

There are also some e-cards you can make and send out, as well as information and facts about the big event.

The app is free and a nice little way to enjoy times square without the crowds wherever you may be.
