Parking in the Fan could be getting tougher for people who don't live in the neighborhood. A new proposal would add more time limitations to when cars, without a permit, can park along certain streets. The goal is to give residents an easier time finding a parking space. However, that also means VCU students and other visitors might be looking a bit harder.
The Fan District Association and the West Avenue Improvement Association have worked with the city's parking division on the problem. The neighborhood groups have proposed this solution: extend one-hour parking limits (for cars without a permit) from 7 a.m. until midnight, every day, including weekends. The new rules would affect parts of West Avenue, Birch and Boyd Streets in the lower Fan.
The new parking plan was pitched to neighbors, like Nicole Little.
"We were all like, ‘Great! We can park next to our home more easily. This is going to be great!'" said Little.
A recent NBC12 investigation revealed that the city issued nearly twice as many parking permits than spaces available in the Fan, last year. City officials say they're continuing to hash out protocol on issuing parking decals.
Councilman Charles Samuels says expanding one-hour parking limits was just one idea that's been considered, by residents.
"This is one step of many that we hope to be able to work with the neighborhood on, to help alleviate some of the parking issues," said Samuels.
Not everyone living in the Fan said they were excited about the possible change, especially making parking tougher on the weekend. Some residents say the changes would make it difficult for them to invite company over, since they'd need to pay for multiple guest parking decals.
Supporters of the new parking changes hope they'll go into effect by mid-January. However, before anything can happen, Fan residents are being asked for their input. Any questions or comments can be emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org. If there's enough support, the city can make the parking change administratively. It doesn't require approval from city council.
