CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -
Many retailers offered extra freebies during the holidays to get you to shop at their store.
But there's one shop in town where that happens every day.
We all know the benefits of eating fruits and vegetables. The Chesterfield Berry Farm and Market is helping you do it for less.
"We wanted to get where we were close to the population, with the gas being so expensive now," said president Aaron Goode.
The satellite office opened a year ago in the back of market square. Because he's got the new store on the block, Goode found a way to get customers in the door. He offers something for free every day.
This week, it's two pounds of apples with a six-dollar purchase.
"We just try to give people incentive to come back and return to the store."
Goode has given away squash, tomatoes, pumpkins and corn. He thinks the free produce helps build customer loyalty.
"It's awesome," said Lyndee Walker. "We've been in here before and we've got the children making Christmas wreaths and I asked three or four times, 'Are you sure you don't want us to pay for the stuff?' and they're 'No, no. Just take it. Have fun and merry Christmas.'"
Walker signed up for the farm's Community-Supported Agriculture program. You can pre-pay for a year's supply of produce. She says there's something special about this program.
"I have friends in other parts of the country who belong to those, and they just bring you a box of whatever they pick every week. Here, they give you a gift card so you can come to the market and pick out the things that you want, instead of getting things you might not use and have to throw away."
For $450 you get $500 to spend in the store, more free produce throughout the year and exclusive access to farm events.
There are 200 CSA memberships available to the public.
The Chesterfield Berry Farm and Market also offers free cooking classes to show you how to prepare some of the less familiar produce.
