Suspect in deadly Chesterfield collision in court

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

A man accused of running a red light and killing a man who was on his way to church will face a judge Thursday.

26-year-old Stephen Doane was on his way to Chesterfield's House of Prayer on the morning of October 21, when his Honda Civic was struck by a pickup truck on Courthouse Road near the Powhite Parkway. Doane was killed.

44-year-old Reynaldo Solano, who lives two blocks from the crash scene, ran a red light and hit Doane, according to police. Solano was in a GMC pickup truck with one other passenger. Neither Solano nor his passenger were injured.

Doane's pastor says he was an active member, a student, and an iron worker. He was thought to be a role-model for young people in the congregation.

Police do have witnesses who say the pickup ran a red light. Alcohol was not a factor. At this point, it's not clear if speed was a factor. That's something that will come out as proceedings move forward.

As to whether the intersection of Courthouse Road and the Powhite parkway is dangerous, police told us it's not on their top ten list for the county's most accident-prone roadways.

Solano is facing reckless driving charges. He's set to appear in court at 1 p.m.
