Firefighters have confirmed that one person was found dead after a house fire in south Richmond.
An elderly woman is unaccounted for after her home caught fire early Wednesday morning. Police have not yet confirmed whether the body found in the house is that of the homeowner or not.
The blaze broke out shortly after 2:00 a.m. near the intersection of W. 49 Street and Pine Crest Ave in Richmond.
According to Lt. Shawn Jones, a neighbor heard sounds thought to be gunfire or firecrackers coming from next door. The man called 911 when he saw smoke billowing from the home.
"We know an elderly woman lives here, but we are not sure if she was home at the time or traveling for Christmas," said Jones in an interview Wednesday. "Teams are inside checking the entire home, looking for a body"
Investigators said the second floor of the two-story home collapsed as they battled the fire from the outside. No surrounding homes were damaged and no injuries from first responders were reported.
According to Jones, 30 Richmond firefighters arrived on the scene and have blocked traffic on W. 49th Street as the investigation continues.
