A man was shot in the chest at Gilpin Court Christmas night. The victim was rushed to VCU Medical Center with serious wounds, but is still breathing. The shooter is still at large.
Officers say the suspect fired at the victim, a man in his late 20's, just before 5 p.m. Tuesday. The shooting happened right in the middle of the courtyard by St. James Street. Police say three 911 calls came into the station. However, officers hope to talk to more witnesses so they can piece together a description of the suspect.
Sherry Netherland and her mother were driving through the neighborhood handing out Christmas gifts. Their charity was interrupted by the flashing police lights and swarm of neighbors.
"It was shocking," said Netherland. "More shocking because they appeared to be looking for a suspect."
Police don't believe the victim was armed and haven't yet released his identity. They're asking anyone who may know something about this shooting to call Crime Stoppers, anonymously, at 780-1000.
