Chesterfield girl donates Christmas gift to animal shelter

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

A 10-year-old girl from Chesterfield gave up a big portion of her Christmas gifts to help homeless animals. Emily Newsom's act of kindness sparked donations from across the world for the Richmond Animal League.

After adopting her best friend from RAL, a puppy named Harley, Newsom decided to give the shelter a present of her own. Instead of receiving a gift from her aunt and uncle, Newsom asked them to donate to the animal rescue on her behalf.

"I'm donating my Christmas to you guys (RAL)," said Emily, about relaying her gift of $500 to the shelter. "I got my dog from here. I didn't know it (her donation) was going to be this big of a deal."

RAL's director, Amy McCracken, thought it was such a big deal that she shared the story of Newsom's holiday spirit through Facebook and emails.

"When we met (Emily) and realized how adorable and generous she was, we just thought if people knew that she was doing this, how could they not support these efforts?" said McCracken.

Donations in Newsom's name began pouring in from every state, and across the globe.

"Romania, Burundi, Africa, Great Britain, Alaska, New Zealand and Hawaii," listed Newsom, of just some of the international places from where people donated to her cause.

McCracken mapped out each location where someone was so moved by Newsom's gesture, they also gave to RAL. The near $10,000 so far, will help heal furry friends, until they're adopted.

"Medical costs are almost $10,000 every month for all of our animals," added McCracken.

The shelter is also always in need of funding for food, bedding and other necessities. Last year, it rescued 1,300 animals who were running out of time in other local shelters.

Newsom's Christmas effort has raised $9,000 dollars since mid-December. Newsom's goal is $10,000 by Christmas morning.

Donations are accepted through the Richmond Animal League's website. Type "Merry Christmas Emily" in the comment field.
