Henrico Police increasing patrols this holiday week

Shopping areas in Henrico County will be a little more packed with people this holiday season - that's because more police officers will be out through the holiday week.

Not only will there be more officers patrolling, you will also see more DUI checkpoints in the county.

"What this means for the people in the community, is extra eyes and ears out there just watching out for your safety," said Linda Toney, Public Information Officer for Henrico Police.

In Henrico, parking lots are starting to fill up this Friday night as shoppers do their best to get ahead.

Kimberly Carroll says she'll be busy wrapping gifts for her kids tonight, something she said she is grateful for.

"I'm just thankful for my family...I'm thankful I get to be home with all my kids," said Carroll.

Extra patrols will be a good thing especially for Carroll who recently moved from Oregon and was personally affected by the mall shooting there.

"I used to go shopping at town center shopping mall all the time during Christmas, a lot of my friends were there when the shooting happened there and I have 4 children and 2 in elementary school and I'm glad this week there's been policemen at the school making sure the kids are safe," said Carroll.

She said she is still rattled by the unexpected shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.

"This holiday is just tough, I can't imagine what those families are going through," said Carroll.

Carroll said she won't be the only one who welcomes the extra officers out this holiday weekend.

"It's us out there showing the community that it's a safe environment and they can come talk to us if they need to," said Toney.

Many students are on Christmas break now, but when they go back to school in January, Henrico Police say officers will continue to maintain high visibility on and around school property like they have been this past week.
