AAA predicts 1 in 4 Americans will be driving to their various destinations for the holidays.
Starting Friday, officers are designating the next few days as National Holiday Life-Saver weekend. It's an effort to increase police presence, and reduce accidents on the roads.
Last year, Virginia State police says it arrested more than 5100 people for not driving sober. Officers are also encouraging drinkers to have a designated driver in place.
Officers want to remind drivers to move over to a different lane or slow down when someone has been pulled over to the shoulder.
AAA says there will be a 1.5% increase in holiday travelers this year compared to last year.
