Richmond FBI launches website to snag "The Ray-Bandit"

MECHANICSVILLE, VA (WWBT) -

The FBI is looking to turn up the heat on a serial bank robber accused of striking in seven states. His distinct eye-wear scored him the nickname "The Ray-Bandit." The Richmond FBI is hoping a new reward and website will help bring him to justice.

The Ray-Bandit has struck 14 times. He most recently hit two local banks in Hanover County. He hit the Suntrust inside the Mechanicsville Kroger and the BB&T on Chamberlayne Road.

"It's important for everybody to know that banks are doing everything in their power to prevent robberies." said Bruce Whitehurst, president of the Virginia Bankers Association.

The new FBI site launched this week. It allows you to search bank robbers by name or nick-name and plot the Ray-Bandit's hits on a Google map of the United States.

"We feel that there is a strong possibility that someone interacted with him possibly while he ate a meal or filled up his car with gas," said Sgt. Chris Whitley with the Hanover County Sheriff's Office.

Whitehurst hopes the online photos and descriptions of the bandit, coupled with contact information for investigators, will lead directly to the suspect.

"The main thing I feel about people like this serial robber is it's only a matter of time until he is apprehended." said Whitehurst.

The FBI is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the individual responsible for these robberies.
