Carmeka Dunston is mourning the loss of her boyfriend and her son. Her boyfriend is dead and her son is in jail, charged with first-degree murder.
Dunston says her son, 20-year-old Jameshai Smith gunned down her boyfriend, 32-year-old Brian Long Wednesday night around 10:00 p.m.
Long and Dunston had been dating for two years. Smith had lived with the couple in their Chesterfield home without incident. But Dunston says, something made her son snap Wednesday.
"He killed him!" Dunston cried through tears. "He shot through the window and he killed him."
Dunston says Smith had been hooked on prescription drugs when his personality began to change. She describes him as "schizophrenic."
"I had seen a change him in but I didn't think it would go this far," Dunston said.
She told NBC12 that Smith had threatened her with the gun first. She told him to go outside and cool off. Smith went around to the back of the house and to the window leading to the couple's bedroom.
Dunston says, Long was on the bed eating dinner when Smith fired four shots through the window. Long died instantly.
Long's death is the tenth homicide in Chesterfield so far this year. That's up slightly from last year's eight homicides. Sixty percent of this year's homicides have been domestic.
While that number isn't a record, Chesterfield police say that they are concerned. The department has a sexual violence specialist on staff to help victims of domestic violence.
Smith is due in Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court on Friday at noon.
