A gas leak that forced the evacuation of four Chesterfield businesses Wednesday morning is now back under control.
A contractor working around the K-Mart on Jefferson Davis Highway near Route 10 damaged a natural gas line at 11:49 a.m., according to Columbia Gas. Seven businesses were affected by the leak and 62 people were evacuated.
The valve was closed by utility crews after about 45 minutes. By 1:10 p.m. the evacuees were allowed back into the businesses. Columbia Gas estimates all customers should have their service restored by Wednesday evening. Some businesses have already reopened.
