Henrico officers encouraging pet adoption during holidays

Posted: Updated:
HENRICO, VA (WWBT) -

Henrico Police are encouraging people to look to their animal shelter to adopt this holiday season. There are about 40 dogs and 30 cats in need of a good home.

Officers hope people will go here to look before heading to a pet store. The officers also want to remind people looking to get a pet as a gift that it's a lifelong commitment.

Along with adoption, new owners must make sure the animal is spayed or neutered and has all its shots.

"When they decide to take in this animal they have a moral and legal obligation to provide care for that pet basically for his remainder of his life," said Lt. Shawn Sears with the Animal Protection Unit.

Some of the pets available have already been spayed or neutered and you can take them home in time for Christmas.

The Henrico Animal Shelter is at 10421 Woodman Road and is open every day except Sunday and Christmas day.
