Varina has look of Capital District contender

Posted: Updated:
MECHANICSVILLE, VA (WWBT) -

The Varina boys basketball team continued its fast start on Monday night, topping Atlee, 87-44, in Capital District action.  With the win, the Blue Devils improve to 7-1, 4-0 in district play.

The victory marks Varina's seventh straight, and the Blue Devils are quickly looking like a team that could challenge Henrico and Highland Springs for the district championship.  Varina has beaten Lee-Davis by 20, Glen Allen by four points and snuck by Armstrong by a slim two point margin, before rolling past the Raiders on Monday night.

Atlee would keep it close in the first quarter, but Varina would open up a double-digit lead in the second and cruise from there.

Varina will enjoy a ten day break before opening up the Fort Lee Holiday Tournament with Dinwiddie on December 27.  The Blue Devils will get their crack at Highland Springs on January 3, before facing Henrico on January 8.
