Gamecocks return to practice field to prepare for Outback Bowl

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

The University of South Carolina football team started their on-field preparations for the Outback Bowl Saturday.

Team members who weren't taking final exams practiced Saturday morning to open their week-long bowl mini-camp.  The Gamecocks take on Michigan in the Outback Bowl on January 1st.

"We had some confusion on finals and practice, and half the team wasn't here, so we just did a little bit with the young guys and sent them to the weight room," said head coach Steve Spurrier.

"We'll really start getting into Michigan tomorrow (Sunday). We'll have our scouting report and get all that stuff going."

Quarterback Connor Shaw did not practice Saturday, but Spurrier said the Gamecock starter would practice Sunday.

"The plan is to start Connor and get Dylan (Thompson) in somewhere in the first half or first quarter maybe and get both of them ready to play and see how it goes," he said.

There were two former players who did not attend the practice and have played their last games in USC uniforms.  Spurrier confirmed that offensive lineman Kyle Harris and senior wide receiver D.L. Moore would not travel to Tampa, citing violation of team rules. Harris is expected to transfer, while Moore's career as a Gamecock is over.

"It was nice that (Jadaveon) Clowney was a consensus All-American. Everybody's proud of him. He's deserving," said Spurrier.  The sophomore defensive end is the second Gamecock in team history to earn unanimous All-America Honors.

"A lot of other guys played very well this year also," said Spurrier. "D.J. Swearinger has had a super year. Devin Taylor has had a super year. But obviously, Jadeveon got most of the attention and votes for All-American and it's deserving."

Spurrier confirmed that he voted Clowney first on his Heisman ballot.
