Henrico Schools responds to concerns after Connecticut shooting

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) -

It's one of the first questions parents have asked after hearing about the Newtown tragedy: what's being done to keep my child safe?

Local school officials reassured parents that protections are in place, and they have planned for unthinkable scenarios like the one we saw Friday.

Henrico school officials said emergency plans are available 24-7 for parents to look at on the district website.

Several plans for the worst-case scenarios are kept close to staff only - so truly sick minds will never learn them.

"Reunion zones are in the plans but we don't talk about everything publicly," said Andy Jenks, Henrico Public Schools Communications Director.

Emergency plans for Henrico schools, officials tell us, are not set in stone. After tragedies like today, they are revised to meet new threats.

"They're constantly being evaluated so they're as good as possible," said Jenks.

Emergency plans for schools, like Ambrose elementary, can be found online and in handbooks given out at school.

"Info on the web, we ask parents to look it over," said Jenks.

Aboubakrine Abiaye, a parent of a student at Montrose Elementary School, thinks there should perhaps be guards at his children's school now - but admits its impossible to think of a rational plan to deal with irrational minds.

"It's not possible to prevent but actions can be mitigated," said Abiaye.

A new document went out to school counselors Friday about how to talk to kids about violence. Ideas for parents are also available on Henrico's school website.
