Parents could decide direction of Chesterfield Co. school calendar

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -

Families in Chesterfield County could have a little more time to travel over Thanksgiving. That is if school board leaders approve a calendar option for next year.

The school board now has five drafts on the table for next year's calendar. Before officials can make any decision, parents have a chance to weigh in.

In efforts to stay in line with surrounding districts, Chesterfield County Schools discussed the idea of giving students and staff the day off Wednesday before Thanksgiving.

"It's important for our school board to honor a full day before thanksgiving and to have that time at winter break to enjoy the traditions during the holidays," said Chief Academic Officer, Donna Dalton.

The school system must adjust the schedule elsewhere. In the latest draft - number five – Dalton discussed cutting the number of half days which usually gives teachers time to catch up on work and grading.

Earlier this year, the very first draft gave students and teachers a half day prior to Thanksgiving but kept more half days. Right now, the community has five versions to weigh in on online.

"It's important for the public to know that our school board values their opinions," said Dalton. "From their feedback we made significant changes to the calendar."

Tweaking the Thanksgiving Holiday Period would not affect winter break, spring break, or the start of school after Labor Day - all of which are in line with Richmond, Hanover, and Henrico County Public Schools.

Parents will still have time to voice their opinion on each version of the school calendar. The school board leaders say they'll make a decision on next year's schedule at the January 22 meeting.
