Henrico parents “not pleased” with unanimous redistricting vote

Posted: Updated:
RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

After months of public meetings and hearings the latest Henrico County redistricting process is done. But there were changes right up until the last few hours before the final vote.

"Well it is disappointing," said Short Pump Elementary School parent Robert Shippee who is one of more than 1200 families now assigned to a new school next year. "For the plan that they picked to be one that they just kind of pulled out of their hat in the last day is a little frustrating."

Our cameras were rolling as staff members took markers and sketched out a new map just hours before the final vote.

"But I'm not pleased," said Shipped. "The option they chose has some flaws."

The Option 3 plan calls for taking portions of two existing options and merge them. It combines option 2 north of Broad and Option 1 Adjusted south of Broad. The last minute map tinkering is still not expected to achieve the ideal goal of avoiding overcrowding.

"We put together something based on what we were hearing from the community," said Patrick Kinlaw who is deputy school superintendent.

Ridge Elementary is expected to be over capacity. The board wants more time to study their options. The say the changes come in response to more than 300 comments in less than 3 days.
