Packages left on porches make for easy targets

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

It's the busiest time of year for buying gifts and sending them through the mail. However, packages left on porches make for easy targets. Richmond police say several packages have been snatched in the East End, recently.

Shirley Woodson, who lives in the Church Hill neighborhood, says her next door neighbor is out several hundred dollars after her computer tablet delivery vanished.

"The mail carrier…went down the street...He watched the porch. By the time he gone to the corner, the package was gone," said Woodson.

Woodson's neighbor is now scrambling to help police somehow track the tablet using the serial numbers, make and model. However, once a mail package is swiped, chances of it returning aren't often very high. A few easy precautions can make it nearly impossible for your package to be stolen. One of the best ways is to have deliveries shipped somewhere safe, like your place of work. This way, someone can physically accept the package.

"We usually have packages sent to our offices," said Joshua Eckhardt.

He lives a few blocks down from Woodson. Eckhard says a present for his sons was likely lifted from his doorstep.

"My mom sent some shirts for the boys, and we never got them," recalled Eckhardt.

If you've mailed something, and it goes missing, issue a claim with the shipper. If it's expensive, pay extra for insurance, to begin with. You can also choose to make the recipient sign for the package.

If your online delivery disappears call the retailer. Some stores will resend you your order free of charge. However, the easiest option is probably to have your package sent somewhere with people to accept it. Major shippers have post boxes or holding locations where you can send items. Woodson said her neighbors packages now arrive to her doorstep, where she can accept them for her friend, to avoid an unfortunate situation from happening again.
