An Albemarle County Police lieutenant with 27 years of experience is charged with embezzling public funds.
Lt. Ernest Allen, 51, worked with the Special Operations Division, but resigned after a discrepancy involving petty cash. A spot check last week found he had removed $380 from the fund. Colonel Steve Sellers relieved Allen of his police authority and suspended him the same day. Allen repaid the money and was resigned on Monday.
Embezzling public funds is a class 4 felony.
"The men and women of the Albemarle County Police Department are dedicated to maintaining high standards of integrity and professionalism," the department wrote in a press release. "An incident of this nature erodes public trust and tarnishes the image of all law enforcement in our community."
