Henrico roundabout, development gets green light

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) -

Henrico officials have approved rezoning for a roundabout, along with a huge urban development planned for the West End.

The roundabout is slated to be built by Nuckols Road in the Innsbrook Area. The one-lane circle is supposed to ease traffic, which neighbors say is already a problem.

At Tuesday night's Board of Supervisors meeting, some residents opposed to the proposed apartment, retail and housing development, tried to detour it once again.

"We are united with concerns of density, with traffic, with congestion. This is a quality of life issue," Dave Cummings, who lives near the site, told the Board.

More development means more traffic, and traffic engineers say a roundabout is the safest, and fastest, way to move the projected 10,000 cars along each day.

"Roundabouts have fewer conflict points than other types of intersections, and this lowers the crash potential," said Mike Jennings, Assistant Director of Public Works in Henrico.

Jennings says the roundabout can handle up to 25,000 vehicles a day. The expected number of cars to pass through the intersection in upcoming years is 10,000, less than half of its capacity.

"Roundabouts, contrary to the traffic engineer… could do nothing but create traffic jams. If you have to slow cars down… going 10 to 15 miles an hour is not going to move traffic," said neighbor Rob Warlick.

One neighbor suggested a much different route.

"Buy my neighborhood out, because there are people wanting to sell out. They're tired of it. They're tired of the arguing. They're tired of the noise. They're tired of the traffic... make us an offer we can't refuse," said Terry Blankenship.

Despite voiced objections, the Board agreed to move forward on the  roundabout, and the development. The builder says the complex could bring 5,000 jobs and hundreds of millions of dollars to the West End.
