New Amtrak line to Norfolk rolls through Henrico

The official debut for the Amtrak line to Norfolk is not until Wednesday, but the train made its debut with stops in Henrico and Petersburg.

From now on, the train will make one round-trip every day between Norfolk and Washington, D.C.

Rich and Jenni Jinel are excited for the new line. They say it will save them a few dollars on gas and miles on their car.

"It'd be perfect, you don't have to drive it," says Jenni Jinel.

Transportation leaders are all aboard for the new destination.  They were actually on board for the inaugural ride that took them from Washington D.C. to Norfolk.  Ceremonies were held at various stops including the Petersburg and the Henrico stations.

The train can hold about 265 passengers.  It starts in Norfolk around 4:50 a.m., gets to Henrico around 7 a.m. and then D.C. around 9:45 a.m.  Amtrak says there are plans to add two more lines in the near future.

"This is a wonderful thing to have here, the business community loves it," say Henrico County board supervisor for Tuckahoe Pat O'Bannon.

But as passengers are expected to board in Henrico, the question now is: can the parking lot keep up with the demand?

"They really need to improve the parking, whether it be a lot right accessible to this lot, adjacent to it or some sort of garage parking because parking is difficult," says Jinel.

"We've been working on that very diligently," says O'Bannon.

O'Bannon says there are talks of putting up a new traffic signal making it easier to get in and out of the lot.

The line will be open to the everyday passenger starting Wednesday. The destination in Norfolk is Harbor Park.
