Inaugural run celebrates launch of new Amtrak Virginia service to Norfolk

On Tuesday, December 11, the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT) and Amtrak will host an inaugural run of the new Amtrak Virginia service to Norfolk with ceremonies in Ashland, Richmond, Petersburg and Norfolk.

Each ceremony will include Virginia Secretary of Transportation Sean Connaughton, Amtrak President & CEO Joe Boardman, Amtrak Board Chair Tom Carper, CSX Executive Vice President Ellen Fitzsimmons, Norfolk Southern Chairman & CEO Wick Moorman, and local dignitaries from each community. Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell will join the ceremony in Norfolk.

The round-trip daily train, launching December 12, will bring intercity passenger rail service to Norfolk for the first time since 1977, and will link Norfolk with a same-seat ride to Richmond, Washington, D.C., New York City and more.
