NORFOLK, VA (WWBT) - VCU used big nights from Troy Daniels and Treveon Graham, along with a solid all-around effort from Briante Weber, to top Old Dominion, 83-70, Friday night in Norfolk. Shaka Smart's team improved to 6-3 on the year and has won three straight games, as well as three in a row over ODU.
The Rams opened up a 20 point lead late in the first half and held a 43-30 advantage at the break. They'd see the lead creep back to 20 early in the second half, but the Monarchs would chip away and pull to within eleven late in the game. The clock proved to be their worst enemy, however, as the Rams held on for the 13 point victory.
Troy Daniels had the hot hand in the first half, draining six threes in the frame. He finished the night with 24 points, which came on eight three pointers. Graham added 23 points of his own, along with nine rebounds. Weber finished the night with eight points, but added nine rebounds, ten assists and five steals. DeShawn Painter scored a game-high 26 points for the Monarchs and added ten rebounds.
Darius Theus returned to the Rams, but did not start. He tallied 16 minutes and tallied an assist, only taking one shot on the night, as he is coming back from a sprained knee.
VCU returns to action next Saturday, December 15, as former Rams head coach Anthony Grant and Alabama visit the Siegel Center.
