MORE BANG FOR YOUR BUCK: VACU statement rewards

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

We're used to banks holding our money and deducting it when we spend, but there's one local institution that's giving it back.

How'd you like to get discounts and refunds, just for shopping where you already do?

Virginia Credit Union is rewarding its customers with future discounts on the purchases they make.

"By shopping and using their debit card you can receive rewards such as cash back deals and gift cards at a discounted rate as well as discounts at the point of purchase," said Frank Macrina, VP of E-Services.

All you need is your card and access to online banking.

When you spend money at participating retailers, your reward will show up on the checking account activity page.

"We're all about mutual value and felt this was a great pairing to offer to something for our online banking users," said Macrina.

Many popular retailers, like Home Depot, Lowe's and Best Buy, have signed onto the venture.

The offers you get are based on your purchase data. Not only will you save at the places you're shopping now, but that retailers direct competitor might try to lure you away, giving you a discount to shop at their store.

One customer ordered pizza from Dominos - he now has the opportunity to get a $10 gift card to Papa John's for $8.

Statement rewards will appear to every member of the Virginia Credit Union, and they want to know what you think.

Every reward let's you give it a thumbs up or down. The feedback will refine the future offers you get.

"The goal is to help our members save money. We want them to spend responsibly but we want to provide value for online banking."

For those concerned with data tracking, the Virginia Credit Union keeps customer's personal information anonymous.
