Thief caught on camera stealing computer equipment

A thief is on the run and some Richmond store owners hope you can help them find him.

There is surveillance video of the person they believe tried to break into at least two stores on East Main Street. He did get into the First & Main Computer Service store and ended up taking thousands of dollars worth of goods.

The store owner believes the suspect actually tried to break into other businesses in the 100 block of East Main Street before he found a way to get into computer store.

From one angle, it doesn't seem like the burglary suspect knows he's being watched. The video was taken from inside the computer store around 3 a.m. Thursday morning. The owner, Matt Hughes, discovered the damage first.

"He actually was able to break into an alley on the side here, then broke a window to gain access into the building," he said.

The store owner says after the suspect shattered a window, he made his way to the front of the store - where the security cameras catch him taking everything from computers, laptops, even cell phones.

Hughes says the burglary took about 20 minutes.

"We're still tallying it all up, but it is thousands and thousands of dollars worth of stuff," he said.

The computer store specializes in refurbishing and selling computers, laptops and phones.  These are all items police say thieves like to take because it's easy to sell.

In another angle of the surveillance video you can see what he is wearing, including a grey American Eagle sweatshirt. Eventually, he notices the camera in the corner of the room and rips it off the wall. But it doesn't stop a back up surveillance system from capturing the whole thing.

"It's a sickening feeling," Hughes says.

Hughes spent the day calling several customers who had their items stolen.

If you know anything that could help with this investigation, call Crime Stoppers at 780-1000.

Another store owner on that block says the suspect damaged one of their doors when he tried to break in. Police say this is an ongoing investigation.
