Henrico to hold meeting on redistricting plan

Posted: Updated:
HENRICO, VA (WWBT) -

The Henrico school district says its trying to come up with a redistricting plan that's balanced and fair, so it will have another meeting Thursday night to hear from the public.

The meeting will be held at Hermitage High School at 6 p.m. It remains a controversial issue ever since school leaders proposed pulling students from their current schools in order to open a new school next year.

We've seen how concerned many Henrico County parents are about redistricting from past meetings on the same topic.

With the opening of a new elementary school in the fall, students from as many as 13 schools will be shuffled to various schools to make sure all schools are balanced. Many parents have made it clear they don't want their current attendance zones changed at all.

There are three proposals on the table, two created by parent volunteers and one by school personnel. Parents will weigh in on which ones they support. The board will make a decision a week from Thursday.

School officials are asking neighborhoods to pick a designated spokesperson to speak for the neighborhood so there aren't multiple people voicing the same concerns.

Also those wanting to speak out are encouraged to contact the school board prior to Thursday's meeting.
