Shaka optimistic Theus will play vs. ODU

Posted: Updated:
RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

VCU was able to pull out a close win without their oncourt leader.  They'd just rather not have to do it again.

Shaka Smart said on Wednesday that senior point guard Darius Theus is "not 100%", and he's getting treatment around the clock.  Smart said that he thinks Theus will play, and that VCU trainer Ed Benion is optimistic that Theus will be ready.

Theus is incredibly anxious to play Friday night at Old Dominion.  The Ted Constant Convocation Center is just minutes from where Theus grew up.  But even Theus admits that he will not push it if he feels he is not ready.

Sophomore Ted Okereafor started at point guard vs. Belmont, but Smart said he did not play very well. But, Smart said, Briante Weber played incredible well in the victory.  Smart said he has not decided who will start if Theus cannot play Friday.

The VCU-ODU rivalry feels a little different this year.  With the Rams in the Atlantic-10, this is not a conference game anymore, so the game is in December instead of towards the end of the year. Also, the Monarchs have struggled mightily, starting the season 1-7.
