Former Skyhawks root on alma mater to take title

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - Some of the best players in Central Virginia have come out of L.C. Bird High School.  But until now, none of them have been able to call themselves state champions.

Now anyone who's ever been a Skyhawk is hoping that changes this week.  L.C. Bird will play Ocean Lakes Saturday at Scott Stadium in the Division 6 state title game.

Former Skyhawk Eric McBride could not be more proud of his alma mater.  McBride played linebacker and then a host of different offensive positions for the Hawks in the mid-2000s.  He played in three state semifinal games, but never a final.

McBride says that he's going with a few of his former teammates, and he expects many former Skyhawks will be in Charlottesville Saturday.  The University of Richmond grad worked out with the players in the offseason, and is welcome to return and give the young players words of wisdom.

After graduating from UR, McBride spent one offseason with the Redskins.  Last year he played for the Omaha Nighthawks of the UFL.  He's planning on attending the minicamp for the Calgary Stampeders, and hopes to play in the Canadian Football League next year.
