All lanes of Interstate 95 south are back open after a construction incident created massive backups.
A loose steel plate in the construction zone forced VDOT to close two lanes of the highway near Boulevard at Robin Hood Rd. The lane closures created 25 to 30 minute delays throughout the morning rush hour.
VDOT says the loose plate came during emergency repairs and not part of their normal bridge replacement activities. As a result the contractor will not be fined. However, they will be responsible for any vehicle damage claims drivers submit as a result of the misaligned plate.
VDOT plans to meet with the contractor to find out why this plate shifted and what their plan is to keep this from happening again.
