NBA team could temporarily play in Richmond

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Virginia Beach officials have made it clear they want an NBA team. An economic director there is saying that if an NBA team relocates to Virginia Beach, it may need to temporarily play in Richmond.

Virginia Beach is deciding whether to build an 18,000 seat arena at the oceanfront. Officials anticipate a new $300 million arena could be ready in 2015, but if a team relocates it would need to play in smaller venues for the next two seasons.

Virginia Beach said that Richmond is a good venue because the Richmond Coliseum seats about 12,000 people.

Other arenas in Norfolk and Hampton are not as large as the Richmond Coliseum.
