Police release identity of fatal hit and run victim

Chesterfield police are looking for a driver involved in a deadly hit and run early Tuesday evening.

Police say Christopher R. Coleman, 20, was struck by two vehicles on Hopkins Road around 5:30 p.m. Police say a Pontiac first hit Coleman, who was in the middle of the road near Little Creek Lane. Then, a brown truck struck him right after. The driver of the Pontiac car stayed at the scene, while the truck driver took off.

Coleman was pronounced dead at the scene. Blood-soaked rags, a shoe, a watch and a jacket were left strewn on the street.

"We could see that the emergency squad was already here, and they had the person covered up," said neighbor Bob Akers who heard the collision.

"By the time I got over there it was too late… body on the pavement," said neighbor Tim Freeman, who lives across from the accident and heard the crash, as well.

Neighbors on Hopkins Road, near Hopkins Road Elementary School, say it's a dangerous stretch. They point out that there's just one street light on the block. There's no sidewalk on one side of the road and neighbors say people are crossing all the time, as cars often speed over the limit. Residents also say that a stop sign, close to the accident scene, is also missing. They say it fell off months ago, and still hasn't been replaced.

"You got a lot of people walking up and down this street… all ages, little kids to older people," described Freeman.

Police haven't detailed any charges, yet. The victim's family has been notified.

Police are asking for anyone with information about this crash to call 748-1251.  If you wish to remain anonymous, call Crime Solvers at 748-0660.
