RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Authorities have arrested a man for attacking a State Trooper on Richmond's Southside.

Michael D. White, 31 was taken into custody by Virginia State Police and Richmond Police around 4:20 p.m. Tuesday in the 100 block of Giant Drive without incident. According to one officer, a K-9 unit found the suspect behind Recreation Plus.

The search began around two hours earlier, when a suspect attacked Virginia State Police Trooper R. J. Barrett near the intersection of Midlothian Turnpike and German School Road.

Barrett was working in a construction zone, when he saw two men get into an argument. He tried to intervene when the suspect attacked him, State Police said. Barrett suffered serious cuts and was taken to Chippenham Medical Center for treatment.

State Police, K-9 and helicopter units searched the area after the suspect ran away. Special agents searched a vehicle they say White was using near the scene and found a concealed firearm.

White is charged with attempted capital murder, malicious wounding, resisting arrest, possession of a firearm while a convicted felon, concealed weapon, and possession of a firearm with no serial number. He will be held without bond pending his arraignment Wednesday morning in the Manchester General District Court.
