Virginia State Police are investigating a deadly officer-involved shooting incident.
The Prince Edward County Sheriff's Office responded to a domestic disturbance call at a home on the 3100 block of Miller Lake Road around 11:30 p.m. Sunday.
"Evidently he locked himself inside and was shooting at the police officers on scene," said Penny Osborne, who heard most of the dispute unfold over scanner traffic. Neighbors say the two male relatives are believed to have been arguing over money.
"It just breaks your heart that someone would think money was more important than life." said Osborne.
There was an exchange of gunfire between a man and sheriff deputies. The State Police Third Division Tactical Team was called in to assist. Whey they arrived they found a man dead in the yard, and they discovered another man dead inside the trailer.
"It sounded like a very scary situation on the scanner," said Osborne. "I was very worried about the police."
State Police say evidence at the scene suggests the man inside the trailer was shot before deputies arrived on scene, however they are still investigating who fired the deadly shot.
"The city is coming to the country. We see this everyday in the city," said Linda Staylor, who lives right down from where the shooting took place. "It makes me afraid, because we are not used to these things happening around here. We're used to being peaceful and secure and leaving our doors unlocked. We can't do that any longer."
State police have not yet released the names of the two relatives. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday. Investigators say they do not believe alcohol played a factor.
