Post-influenza pneumonia

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -

Dr. Kelly McDonald is seeing cases of the flu that lead to pneumonia.

If you get the flu and the fever persists, resolves or recurs and your cough improves and then worsens, it could indicate pneumonia.

The best way to avoid post-influenza pneumonia is by getting a flu shot, washing your hands carefully, avoiding crowds and sick people.

If you have flu symptoms and fever persists, you should see your doctor who can order a chest x-ray. Occasionally, hospitalization and IV antibiotics are needed.
